Q1: Tell us about yourself...
Hi, my name is Deb. I’m a wife and a proud mom of four amazing adult children. Now that I’m an empty nester, I’ve found myself diving into woodworking, refurbishing, and home design as both a passion and a creative outlet.
Q2. Why do you want to be a woodworker?
I started woodworking a few years ago when I noticed my kids needed certain things for their rooms — furniture, shelves, or custom pieces — and instead of always buying them, I decided to make them myself. It became a way for me to create, save money, and make something meaningful for the people I love.
Q3. Do you think being a mom has influenced your woodworking creations?
Absolutely. Most of what I create comes from the needs of my family. From a wine shelf for my husband to a modern sneaker rack for my daughter, to a custom desk organizer for my son’s dorm — everything is made with them in mind. Being a mom means I’m constantly inspired by what would make their lives easier and more beautiful.
Q4. As a mother, do you have any preferences when it comes to tool choice for woodworking? (Safety, environmental protection...)
Yes, I care a lot about the tools and materials I use — especially when it comes to safety and health. For example, I prefer using wood cutting boards instead of plastic for food prep and make sure to use non-toxic oils and finishes. I also try to choose brands that value the environment, health, and family — just like I do.
Q5. Do you make any special designs for your kids when you’re working on home design and building?
All the time! My designs are often guided by my children’s needs — a shoe display for my daughter, a dining table for my son, wall accents and shelves for their homes. Every piece I build is made to fit not just their spaces, but also their personalities and lifestyles.
Q6. Do you think being a mom gives you unique ideas when you’re designing?
Definitely. Being a mom has taught me to think practically, emotionally, and creatively all at once. I want my designs to be functional, safe, beautiful — and full of love. It’s also given me the best design team ever: my daughters, my son’s fiancée, and their girlfriends. We call ourselves the "ACD design team" — they’re my go-to when I need opinions or inspiration.
Q7. What would you like to say to other woodworking mothers this Mother's Day?
To all the woodworking moms out there: keep creating, keep building. You are inspiring others just by doing what you love. Every piece you make is a reflection of care and creativity — and that’s truly magical. From wood to wonder, moms make magic. Happy Mother’s Day!
To every woodworking mother:
Thank you! From wood to wonder, mom makes magic.
