Game changer - forget the others. A bit bulky and heavy so small spaces may be a limitation. Needs chuck key holder and crosshair lines really want to be extended down the sides of the base.

There's nothing not to like about this. When I received the box, unpacking it was difficult, in a good way. They had this thing packed in with foam so secure that it almost needed to be cut out of there. In the end, I wiggled it free, but they get an A+ for packaging. I pulled it out, and was surprised at the weight. This is not light, it's a quality drill guide. They included a chuck key and the **** had to be screwed on to the sides, but other than that, it was ready to go. Every piece of this is a quality component from the chuck to the base. There's no flex in it, and it can be used as simply as just attaching your drill to the shaft and the bit to the chuck, or you can also adjust the angle that you need to drill. The base has a V-notched block so you can drill round items, such as pipe or dowels by placing it on the base. I had another one of these from a different brand, for about the same price, but it was not nearly as well built. This slides up and down the rods very smoothly and easily. There's a separate drill fence that you can use to drill a straight line of holes up to 10.4 inches from the edge of the board, but you need to buy that separately. I wish they'd included that even if the price was a bit more. Other than that though, there's nothing I can find about this not to like.

At the risk of sounding dramatic, I have to say this is the portable drill press attachment I've been looking for my entire woodworking career.

We‘’ve made do with a half dozen different $50-150 versions of this for years, always complaining about the obvious shortcomings: small, unstable base plates with no good attachment methods, too much slop in the chuck as well as the guide rods, and problems keeping the two guide rods consistently aligned.

ALL of these issues are solved with this one! The linear guide bearings that the chuck assembly rides on are smooth and incredibly tight. The three post design is sheer genius. The chuck itself is mounted into another linear bearing collar and as purported in the listing has virtually zero runout or deflection, even when used on an angle.

We just put it through the paces, drilling several hundred angled baluster mortises with a 3/4" Forstner bit in oak handrails, using a custom made baseplate. I could go on and on but I would recommend this gizmo over any other out there, including the $500 Woodpeckers version, which lacks TONS of the elements that make the SpeTool so amazing.

Now, my ONLY complaints are:
-it doesn't come with the optional guide rail and stop assembly (you have to go on their website directly and purchase separately? Which seems pretty silly for two stainless rods and an aluminum plate.)
-for a $250 tool, one that is of a fairly odd shape, you'd think they would at least put it in a cheap metal toolbox or case... If it's going to live in your shop, no problem, but we are on-site finish carpenters and I can't just have this thing bouncing around on a shelf in one of our sprinters.

... in short, I think they could easily get away with selling this for $300 if it included the guide assembly and a simple toolbox! But all that said, this machine is truly a game changer, and I would never hesitate to recommend any carpenter or woodworker to purchase this. Thanks SpeTool (despite your hilariously generic-sounding company name)!

I have a large floor drill press as well as a couple smaller bench models, but sometimes it is easier to take the tool to the work rather than the other way around. I have had very good results with SpeTool products in the past so I thought I would try this portable drill guide out from them. This thing is a beast and is well designed and engineered. Very heavy duty and rugged. They did not cheapen out on the materials on this and I am very impressed with the quality of the chuck. Slides up and down on bearings and is super smooth and allows you to get a dead perfect hole. Made of thick durable cast/machined aluminum and steel, this is going to last forever. I love how adjustable this is getting perfectly angled holes as well is way easier than on the bench or floor drill press and this is just so portable and easy to carry around I think my drill press machines are going to get cobwebs on them.

I received this item this morning and could not wait to get it out of the box. As soon as I had it out, I realized that this drill guide is not like my old Milescraft at all. I had been shopping for a good drill guide for some time when my Milescraft broke. I was about to purchase the Rockler in-house model, until I saw this Spetool brand one. I have purchased Spetool stuff in the past, and the quality has always been impeccable, so I decided to give this one a try. The guide is made out of perfectly crafted aluminum and steel. It is extremely well-built and looks very high-end. I tested it out with about 50 different holes in all angles, and it works so very well. The adjustments for angle are precise and accurate. The chuck is really heavy-duty and easy to get set up. I was really impressed with how wide the base is because it remains sturdy even at a sharp angle. The sliding mechanism works very well as it rides up and down the shaft with ball bearings. Overall, I am highly impressed with the way that Spetool makes their products. This is not a cheap item by any standard - but it is an excellent value for what you get. Many brands of products with this level of quality would charge twice as much so I really am happy I got this one.
