#CRAFTING LEGENDS:Ellen

Q1: Tell us about yourself...

“Hi. My name's Ellen and I got into woodworking about 5 years ago... I do have two kids—two girls. They're both grown, they're in their 30s.”

Q2Why do you want to be a woodworker?

“I was sitting at work one day, scrolling through YouTube, and I stumbled upon these beautiful epoxy river tables. I thought to myself, ‘I think I can do that.’ ... It took me a while, but I finally started making some nicer things.”
“I was 60 when I decided I wanted to get into woodworking. And it was one of the best decisions I have made.”

Q3:Do you think being a mom has influenced your woodworking creations?

“Every now and then, they’ll ask me to make them something. I've made both of them coffee tables—river tables with epoxy—and they love them.”
“I made a ton of epoxy and wood coasters. I sent a bunch of sets to my daughter... and she gave them out as client gifts.”

Q4:What role do you think a mom's intuition and decision-making play in entrepreneurship?

“There is no better way to teach your kids than by example... Let them see what you’re doing. Let them help... Teach them that they can do anything they want... I think as a mom, you have great influence over your kids by what you do. So set that example.”

Q5:Can you tell us a memorable experience related to woodworking since you became a mom?

One memorable experience as a woodworker came a few years ago... I made a ton of epoxy and wood coasters. I sent a bunch of sets to my daughter who gave them out as client gifts... It’s so heartwarming and satisfying when your kids say, ‘My mom made this.’”

Q6: What would you like to say to other woodworking mothers this Mother's Day?

“What I’d like to say to other woodworking moms this Mother’s Day is: I admire you. Keep going. I know it takes a lot of organization—you’re juggling a lot with kids and sports and husbands and housework and cooking… You guys are amazing. Keep it up.”

To every woodworking mother:

Thank you! From wood to wonder, mom makes magic.
