Can I flatten a wood slab with a router surfacing bit?

🔍 Absolutely. Using a surfacing bit in conjunction with a **router sled** or a CNC machine is a common way to flatten wide slabs. You set up the router to move in a grid or back-and-forth pattern over the slab, and the surfacing bit will shave off the high spots. Because SpeTool’s surfacing bits are wide (some are 2"" or even 3"" in diameter), they make quick work of large areas. Just take shallow passes and overlap each pass slightly. Many woodworkers flatten “cookie” rounds, live-edge table slabs, or big cutting boards by running a surfacing bit over the surface until it’s uniformly flat. It’s an ideal solution when you don’t have an industrial planer – a good router and a surfacing bit can handle surprisingly large pieces.
