What is a compression spiral bit and when do I use it?

🔍 A **compression bit** is a special spiral bit that combines both up-cut and down-cut flutes on the same tool. The lower portion of the bit is up-cut and the upper portion is down-cut. This design pulls fibers toward the center of the material from both sides, leaving clean edges on both the top and bottom surfaces simultaneously. Compression bits are ideal when cutting through materials like plywood or laminates because they prevent tear-out on either face. You would use a compression bit for through-cuts in double-sided veneered plywood, for example, or anytime you want **chip-free edges on both sides** of the workpiece. Just note that to get the full benefit, you need to cut at least as deep as the up-cut portion length, so that both flute directions engage the material. They are commonly used in CNC routers for cabinet parts and high-quality plywood cuts.
