What is a compression flush trim bit?

🔍 A compression flush trim bit is a special type of flush trimming bit that has both up-cut and down-cut spiral geometry (much like a compression spiral bit, but with bearings for template use). Often these bits have a bearing on both top and bottom as well. The idea is that the lower portion of the cutters pulls upward and the upper portion pushes downward. This means it can trim **both sides of a panel without tear-out** – perfect for double-sided laminates or veneered plywood. For example, if you’re pattern-routing a piece of plywood, a compression flush trim will leave a clean edge on both the top veneer and bottom veneer simultaneously. SpeTool’s compression flush trim bits have this dual action and usually come as top-and-bottom bearing designs for versatility. In practice, you can start the cut with the bit oriented one way, then flip the work or router and use the other bearing – the compression flute ensures the middle of the cut shears from both directions toward the center. The result is super clean edges. They’re a bit more expensive but a lifesaver for laminate work or anytime you absolutely cannot have splintering on either face.
