Do I need a 1/2-inch shank router to use surfacing bits?

🔍 Not always, but many surfacing bits do come with a 1/2\" shank. The larger diameter bits (especially 2\" and 3\" surfacing cutters) typically use 1/2\" shanks for strength and to reduce vibration. If you have a router with only a 1/4\" collet, you can still find smaller spoilboard bits (for example, 1\" diameter bits often come in 1/4\" shank). However, for serious slab flattening or frequent use, a router that accepts 1/2\" shank bits is recommended so you can use the heavy-duty bits. The SpeTool 3\" insert surfacing cutter, for instance, is 1/2\" shank only. In short: 1/4\" shank surfacing bits exist for light duty or small machines, but 1/2\" shank bits are sturdier and preferred for large-scale flattening jobs.
