Five-wing insert bit planes slabs lightning-fast: 3 ¼″ cutting diameter on a rigid ½″ shank, each 12 × 12 × 2.2 mm carbide knife offering four usable edges. Chamfered 45° corners leave smooth, burr-free surfaces in hardwood, plywood, MDF, or epoxy, while industrial-steel body resists vibration for mirror-flat finishes.

Product Description

SpeTool’s W05014 surfacing monster shreds setup time on slab flattening, spoilboard renewal, and wide dados. The 3 ¼-inch head hosts five 45° chamfered carbide inserts that hog material while polishing the surface, so sanding starts finer. Each 12 × 12 × 2.2 mm knife presents four sharp edges—just rotate when dull to slash consumable cost. A stout ½-inch shank and precision-ground steel body tame chatter, letting you push deeper passes on CNCs or table routers. Suitable for hardwood, softwood, MDF, plywood, laminate, and epoxy, this industrial-grade bit turns rough stock into finish-ready panels in minutes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Five cutters multiply the cutting edges in contact at any moment, so you remove stock faster and leave a finer “scallop” pattern than 3-wing competitors such as Amana RC-2255.

The head is 3 ¼ in (82.55 mm) Ø with a 12 mm cutter height; each pass clears 1.6× the area of a 2″ surfacing bit.

Any machine with a ½″ collet and 2¼–3 HP motor (e.g., Bosch 1617, Porter-Cable 7518) can drive the bit if you keep RPM below 18 k—the same ceiling Amana sets for its 3-wing 2½″ cutter.

Set 10 000 – 14 000 RPM for hardwood; stay under 18 000 RPM maximum. Lower speeds reduce heat on the large-diameter edge.

Users report stable results at ⅛″–3⁄16″ (3-5 mm) passes in oak; reduce depth if you hear chatter.

Flip when you see dull streaks or feel more resistance; on softwood spoilboards many users get 20-30 sq ft per edge.

Swirls disappear if feed speed keeps chips, not dust; light sanding with 120-grit usually finishes the surface.

Yes—run shallow 0.060″ passes and a slower feed so epoxy chips eject cleanly without melting.

SpeTool lists around US $89.99; Woodpeckers Ultra-Shear 3½″ (4-insert) is ~$139, while Amana RC-2255 2½″ (3-insert) is ~$119.

They shear the surface instead of scraping, producing a smoother finish that needs less sanding than square-corner inserts.
