Do I need to do anything special to set up a V-bit in my CNC software (for V-carving)?

🔍 When using a V-bit, you’ll want to properly define it in your CAM (toolpath) software. Most CNC software, like VCarve, Carbide Create, etc., have a tool database where you enter the V-bit’s angle and tip diameter. For instance, you’d specify it’s a 60° V-bit with a 0.5mm tip (or whatever the actual tip size is). This allows the software to calculate V-carve toolpaths correctly. For V-carving specifically (where the software modulates depth to create variable-width cuts), you’ll use a “V-carve” or “engrave” toolpath strategy that takes advantage of the bit’s shape. Also, zero your Z-axis carefully – V-bits come to a point, so even a tiny Z error can affect the carving. Many people use a touch plate for precise Z zero on V-bits. In short: define the bit’s geometry in software, use appropriate feed/speed (the software or SpeTool’s guidelines can help), and zero precisely. No other special setup is needed – then you can let the machine do its magic and carve beautiful designs!
